Round Five: SURFER'S PARADISE

Despite forebodings in some quarters that the tight race schedule, with only a week between the Teretonga and Surfers' Paradise races, would make the Australian section of the series a fiasco, fans on the other side of the Tasman were treated to a four-race contest that was exciting and open, even though Graham McRae had the Tasman Cup won for the second time after Sandown Park.

Frank Gardner had his Lola T300 shipshape for Surfers' and Mike Hailwood and his crew accomplished a miracle - well almost - in getting the Surtees TS8A to the grid, a new tub having been flown out from Britain after the Teretonga disaster. McRae added weight to his Tasman claim by winning the 50-lap 100-mile race in 58 min 14.9 sec for an average speed of 103.62 mph and lapping all but Gardner and Frank Matich (Matich A50 Repco V8) who placed second and third.

Matich, fastest Surfers' qualifier, led Gardner from the start and opened up quite a lead. McRae played a waiting game behind Gardner until he found the opening he needed after five laps and then set off after Matich, who was well entrenched in front. McRae inherited the lead when Matich came unstuck in lap 16. Matich made a tremendous effort in the final stages and set a new outright 68 sec record, but with McRae and Gardner well clear he could make little impression, although he finished a lap clear of David Hobbs (McLaren M22), Teddy Pilette (McLaren M10B) and Hailwood, who had started from the back of the grid and run strongly in a hurriedly prepared car.

The Repco powered Elfins sported Tyrell type noses in Australia.

Round Six: WARWICK FARM

Everyone knew that Matich would be the man to beat on his home ground, Warwick Farm, and on the day there was not a driver who could do it. He gained pole position and then went on to win as he liked in 64 min 5.4 sec an average of 94.85 mph. Kevin Bartlett led the rest in the early stages but was overcome by Gardner on lap 13, so had to be content with third place. McRae seems to have a thing about the Sydney circuit and finished fourth, some 12 sec clear of Hailwood, whose car had undergone yet another extensive rebuilding after a qualifying run crash. John McCormack ran 44 of the 45 laps for sixth in the Elfin MR5 Repco. Although no one could get near Matich, Gardner certainly tried and in the process made fastest lap in 1 min 24 sec, an average speed of 96.43 mph.

Round Seven: SANDOWN   37th Australian Grand Prix

Of the 19 starters, 13 were still running at the conclusion of the Australian Grand Prix at Sandown Park, Melbourne. Once again Matich was fastest qualifier and he and Gardner made the best of the start, with Hobbs and McRae next. McRae soon took Hobbs and shortly afterwards found himself in second place as Matich's Repco engine started to smoke when the scavenge pump broke. McRae took off after Gardner and on the way set a 111.23 mph lap record, but he gained the lead more easily when Gardner's Lola lost its fourth gear.

Despite this handicap, Gardner managed to hold off Hobbs who, for the first time in the series, appeared to be really on form and was well clear of the rest. Hailwood made fourth place ahead of Warwick Brown (McLaren M10B) and Pilette, who had been delayed by a puncture. McRae's winning average was 109.38 mph and the Tasman Cup was his for the second successive year.

Although 2 litre cars did not shine, John Harvey finished a creditable 7th at Sandown in the Waggott engined Brabham BT36.

Mike Hailwood (Surtees TS8A) ran 4th at Sandown Park.

Round Eight: Adelaide Raceway

Adelaide International Raceway was an unknown quantity, a new circuit, but there was one driver who liked it - race-winner David Hobbs, who was second fastest qualifier, being 0.7 sec slower than Matich and 0.2 sec faster than McRae. Matich made fastest race lap, 51.2 sec, and it was not much slower than his pole qualifying time of 50,8 sec. McRae led the starters on a scorching hot race day and he held his lead into lap 14, when Matich, who had been pressing hard, finally got by and started to go away. Behind McRae, Hobbs and Hailwood were mixing it wheel-to-wheel, as they did right to the finish. McRae went out with a blown engine and Matich sailed on until his gearbox locked up. He tried to make the pits, but struck an oil patch and spun out, leaving Hobbs in front. Then Hobbs struck the patch that had undone Matich and lost his lead to Hailwood. It looked as though it could be all over bar the shouting and that the remarkably consistent Hailwood was going to turn the trick. But the Surtees threw a rear wheel tread in front of the pits and spun up. The crew made a quick wheel-change, but not quick enough to prevent Hobbs (who was suffering a one minute penalty for allegedly jumping the start) from taking an unassailable lead. Gary Campbell, running the ex-Gardner Lola T300 in third spot, some 40 sec behind Hailwood, lost his chance when he ran over the wheel of Johnnie Walker's Elfin MR5. Walker made fourth, ahead of similarly mounted John McCormack and Campbell. Pilette, who had lost two laps about half-way through the race, because of a puncture, profited from the misfortunes of others, and drove in to third place behind happy Hobbs and not-so-happy Hailwood.

Teddy Pilette (McLaren M10B) took 3rd place at Adelaide.

Adelaide was certainly a turn-up for the books and climaxed an Australian section that proved much better than anyone anticipated.
